Similar to Anthony Bourdain's The Layover, this page shares what a traveller can do, eat, visit and enjoy within 36hrs in Taipei.

Chengdu Carambola (or Star fruit) Ice (成都楊桃冰), established in 1966, has been in business for more than 40 years and in the last four decades, he sells only Pineapple Ice, Seasoned Plums Ice and Pineapple Ice. Business is at brisk at his store in Ximending (西門町), be it in Summer, Autumn or Winter seasons. There is always a long line of customers, queuing to buy the drink or dessert.

Xiaonanmen (小南门传统豆花) was founded by a street vendor operating at the south gate of Soo Chow University City Centre. Its founder hand made the beancurd or soy pudding using traditional methods. He believed in using fresh ingredients, which is still the guiding principle of Xiaonanmen today, to make the soft and delicate texture that melts in your mouth. Because of this principle, the name grew and became an established brand name that people flocked to have them.

If you are in Taiwan, the original flagship store Din Tai Fung (鼎泰豐) is a must try.

The Michelin-starred Restaurant, Din Tai Fung was founded as far back as 40 years ago by a man called Bingyi Yang. In 1993, The restaurant is the only Chinese-run restaurant to be rated as one of the world's Top Best Restaurants by the New York Times. Further international recognition came in 2010, its Hong Kong branch was awarded one Michelin Star that no other Taiwanese restaurant has ever received this accolade. Over the years, it has branches all over the world - Japan, United States, South Korea, Singapore, Hong Kong, Indonesia, Malaysia, Australia and Thailand.

Since 1958, Fu Hang Dou Jiang (阜杭豆漿) has earned its name as one of the most recognizable and popular brand name and its "scarcity" amongst the locals. Firstly, it does not open on Mondays; Secondly, it closes at 12noon because it is sold out or has decided to close the shop early; Lastly, it does not have its own shop and is well hidden in the market. Unless you are a local, otherwise, you will not know where to find great soy milk in Taipei.

Although Pork Chop rice (豬排飯) is one of the well-known food in Taiwan, Chicken Thigh Rice (鸡腿饭) was equally well-known. At Ximending (西門町), there are so many of these restaurants that you are unsure which is the best.

As we started exploring for the best Chicken Thigh rice, we narrowed down to three restaurants - Jin Xuan Pai Gu (金轩排骨), Kingwueng Pork (金圓排骨), and Jin Man Yuan Pai Gu (金满园排骨)

The Pork Ribs/Pork Chop (排骨飯) and Chicken Thigh rice (雞腳飯) at Jin Xuan Pai Gu (金轩排骨) were one of the better restaurants in Ximending (西門町). The Pork Chop rice is one of the well-known food in Taiwan.

There are a couple of Pork Ribs/Pork Chop (炸排骨) restaurants in Ximending (西門町), all competing that they are the original brand with longstanding history. One of the restaurants, Jin Man Yuan Pai Gu (金满园排骨), claimed that they were the original brand with at least 40 years of history.

Located in the popular neighbourhood and shopping district of Ximending (西門町), Kingwueng Pork (金圓排骨) is the best Pork Rib restaurant I have eaten in  the district. At the basement of a shopping mall - Wan Nian Shang Ye Da Sha (萬年商業大樓), this 30-seater modest-looking restaurant did not have any trouble filling them.

On 25 Jun 2015, Celebrity Chef, Gordon Ramsay, star of TV shows Hell's Kitchen and MasterChef US and Restauranteur, opened a branch of his Bread Street Kitchen at Marina Bay Sands Singapore. This casual dining restaurant, modeled after its London counterpart, offers British European fare.

But, Chef Ramsay is not the first celebrity chef to set up a restaurant in Singapore.

Here is a list of restaurants by other celebrity chefs in Singapore (not in chronological order).

If you are among those who love frozen yogurt (or FroYo) or have never tried them before, I made a simple comparison between the three brands in Singapore.
  • The Child - Ilao Ilao (opens in 2012)
  • The Adult - Red Mango (sometime around 2009)
  • The Elder - Yami Yogurt (founded in 1983, one of the first FroYo in Singapore)

A popular dish in Singapore and Malaysia, Mee Rebus is made of yellow egg noodles with a spicy, slightly sweet curry-like gravy. The ingredients of the thick gravy include potatoes, curry powder, water, salted soya beans, dried shrimps and peanuts. The noodles were then garnished with a hard boiled egg, lime, spring onions, green chillies, fried firm beancurd, fried shallots and bean sprouts.

Mirana Cake House offers Muslim, Indonesian, Chinese and Western cuisines, providing a one-stop food service to customers working in the vicinity. I bought a bowl of Mee Rebus at SGD3.50 which was affordable in the Central Business District. The noodles were cooked in al dente style - firm to the bite. The sweet curry-like gravy was thick and yet had a stronger shrimp taste. The noodles were sprinkled with green chillis, coriander and fried shallots. There was also a half piece of hard-boiled egg. Although I liked the noodles, I prefer the gravy to have lesser shrimps as it was a little overpowering. The coriander and green chilli reduced the pungent shrimp taste. (Food rating: 3/5)
