Hee Kee Restaurant (喜记) (Hong Kong), Guangzhou

Set up in 1965, Hee Kee Crab restaurant (喜记) is famous for its crab dishes. We randomly chosen Hee Kee for lunch at TaiKoo Hui (大吉汇). TaiKoo Hui is a multi-complex that comprises of a shopping mall, office towers, a cultural centre, a hotel - Mandarin Oriental hotel and serviced apartments.

At lunch time, the restaurant was already crowded and we had to share with another couple at the same table. When we looked at the menu, we had difficulty in choosing the dishes. Every photos on the menu looked so delicious. Out of greed, we ordered eight dishes. Different from Man Fu Cheng, the waitresses were polite and attentive.

After the meal, we were both full and satisfied. The dishes were immensely divine and it was highly recommended to try this restaurant. All in all, we spent RMB 511 for two persons. I look forward to try them in Hong Kong.

Iced Tofu with Sweet Soy Sauce(刀锋豆腐) is a fantastic cold appetiser. The thinly sliced cold tofu with a light soy sauce was a super combination. It was light and refreshing. A definite great way to start your meal. When you pick up the tofu, it was strong enough not to break into pieces. Yet, it was soft and melted in your mouth. (Food Rating: 4/5)

Salt and Pepper Rice Fish (椒盐白饭鱼) was the second dish served. I dislike fishes with fish smell and after taste. However, this dish - pepper salt fish delights me. When the dish was served hot, the tint of salt and pepper brought out the sweet taste of the fish. Although I like this dish, it is recommended to be eaten when hot. When it was hot, it became normal. (Food Rating: 3.5/5)

I am not an avid fan of abalone personally. However, as a food sleuth, it is necessary to try out new food. In this dish - Marinated Abalone (喜记招牌卤水鲜鲍), the abalone was served in a simple presentation. The abalone laid on top of the mussel shell. The abalone was supposed to be dipped into a saucer of soy and wasabi. The taste was nice - fresh abalone and not forgetting chewy. Still, I am still feeling neutral about abalone. The crunchy picked cucumber - First Class Crispy Cucumber (一品脆黄瓜) was another wow factor during the entire dining experience. Though it was just a simple dish, cucumbers soaked with black vinegar. It was a must as cold appetiser. Coupled with the sourness from the black vinegar, the sweet cucumber was refreshing. It somehow whetted my appetite immediately. A catalyst to clear my palatte and I was ready to take in more food. (Food Rating: 4/5)

Sweet and Sour Pork with Hawthrone and Lychee (山楂荔枝咕噜肉) was a different version of the usual Sweet and Sour Pork. The Hawthorne brought out the sourness and of course, the lychees were sweet. It was marvellous. However, the taste was a little heavy. It is best to eat with white rice. Otherwise, your palatte will be dull very soon. (Food Rating: 3/5)

Crab Meat Braised Matsutake (蟹肉烩松茸) served with one of the most expensive mushrooms and crab meat. When served, we could not see any crab meat but the sauce and mushroom was delicious. The mushrooms were arranged in two parallel lines and soaked with the yellow sauce. (Food Rating: 3/5)

Typhoon Shelter Chicken (避风塘鸡翼) is my all time favourite despite of its interesting name. When the dish was first served, I wondered how delicious could it be. To my surprise, this dish blew me away. The chicken wings were perfectly cooked with crispy skin and tender juicy meat. Then the bits were absolutely divine and you could even eat it alone with white rice. The bits were extremely fragrant although I could not taste the ingredients, besides garlic. This was a must!!! (Food Rating: 4.5/5)

Fried Beef Ribs (招牌美极牛肋骨) - The tender juicy braised beef was marvelicious. It was soft and melts in your mouth. You may dip the beef into the sweet sauce but eating on its own was already heavenly. Fried? I could not taste that it was fried. I was more braised than fried. I love this dish. Yummy. (Food Rating: 4/5)
