Looking for a restaurant for family gather or reunion dinner? How about trying a 25-year old American-style Chinese Restaurant here in Singapore.
Enclave in the tranquil Seletar Hills near Jalan Kayu, the restaurant was a small place with at most 12 round tables of 10 pax in an air conditioned room and more tables outside the restaurant.
Because it was the lunar new year and a family gathering, we took the set dinner menu at $498++. We replaced some of the items and they were still very delicious. Like a Chinese saying, 真材实料, which means the restaurant used good ingredients to make such delicious food. The service was also very prompt and the staff were very friendly and attentive. It was a very good dining experience.
House Special Prosperity Yu-Sheng (above) is often seen during the Chinese New Year. The Chinese will toss the items and shout their wishes for the new year, such as good career prospects and have a child.
Fish Maw, Fresh Crabmeat, Chicken and Mushroom Potage was an excellent broth to start our meal. The ingredients were fresh and generous in portion. By the time you finished the soup, you are already half full. (Food rating: 4/5)
The Camphor Tea Smoked Duck is the restaurant's house specialty. Cooked using Camphor Tea, the duck was moist and the tea fragrance was phenomenal. You can eat without dipping on the sauce, which tasted like hoisin sauce. You should eat it on its own. (Food rating: 4/5)
Braised Baby Abalone on Greens was served with Chinese spinach. The spinach was a little bitter but with the sauce, the vegetable tasted just nice. The abalone was nicely cooked. (Food rating: 3.5/5)
'Tung-po" Pork Belly with Steamed Buns was absolutely delicious. The pork belly was lean, tender and very well braised. With the pork belly sandwiched between the steamed bun, the Chinese hamburger was mouthwatering. (Food rating: 4/5)
Crispy Oatmeal King Prawns with Mayonnaise was extremely fragrant and the king prawns was very fresh. The dish was delicious and fragrant because of the crispy oatmeal. You can even eat the oatmeal on its own. (Food rating: 4/5)
Fried Red Garoupa with Sweet and Sour Sauce was divinely delicious. The fish was extremely fresh. When deep-fried, the fish meat crispy on the outside, and yet moist in the inside. The sauce was just nice, not too sweet or sour. It was a delicious dish. (Food rating: 4/5)
General Tso's Chicken was the restaurant's specialty. Instead of having sea cucumber, we changed the dish to General Tso's Chicken. Similar to sweet sour pork, the chicken cubes were deep fried before cooking with the sauce. (Food rating: 4/5)
