Macau Sainan Restaurant (澳门西南饭店), Hangzhou, China

Instead of eating Hangzhou style food, we decided to try something different. We remembered seeing a Cantonese restaurant at Hangzhou Tower City Shopping Centre when we looked for Waipojia. We headed to Block B of the shopping centre where we got ourselves a table at a cosy corner in the restaurant. At Macau Sainan Restaurant (澳门西南饭店), we were greeted by their friendly serving staff.

The food prices were very similar to Waipojia but the interior design was elaborate. At first, I thought that it would be going to cost a lot to dine there. I was wrong. In total, we spent RMB260 (SGD52) for two persons.

The Fried Chicken (当红炸子鸡), priced at RMB 78, was the winner amongst the dishes we ordered at Macau Sainan Restaurant. The skin has a beautiful golden brown colour and it was crispy and flavourful. The meat was tender and moist. You may add the sour plum sauce but I suggest not to. It was already delicious when you eat it on its own. The chicken was indeed a highlight for the entire dining experience (Food rating: 4.5/5)

Priced at RMB 26, the vegetables cooked with special tofu (特色煎豆腐) was interesting. If you look closely, the vegetables were actually chives - lots of chives. The tofu tasted like egg tofu. The entire dish looked simple and tasted a little bland. In the dish, I liked the tofu better. If only there was chilli sauce, I think it would taste better. (Food rating: 2.5/5)

Pork Belly cooked in Fragrant Tea Leaves (西南茶香肉), priced RMB 68, was almost the same as Stewed Pork Belly Bun or Kong Bak Pao from Westlake Restaurant in Singapore. The stewed pork belly was tender and the fats were jelly-like. The sauce was fragrant with the right mix of spices but I could not taste the fragrant tea leaves in the dish. I wonder if I have missed out anything. The stewed pork belly was placed between the steamed buns. The steamed buns were sweet and were also nice to eat it on its own. Oops! I uploaded the picture of a half eaten bun, showing off my big mouth. (Food rating: 3/5)

Crispy Fried Silver Fish (香酥银鱼) was delicious. What was lacking in the dish was the spices. The spices like cajun or paprika were not enough to make it more fragrant. Priced at RMB38, the serving was generous. However, the fishes were a little big and were a little fishy unless I ate the ones with the more spice powder. (Food rating: 2.5/5)

We ordered a jug of watermelon juice which were sweet. We could also taste the watermelon bits in the drink. It was nice and definitely refreshing. (Food rating: 3/5)

We were served with appetisers. I loved the braised peanuts best. The lightly braised fragrant peanuts were divine.
