Tokyo Sundubu - Infusing Korean Stew into Japanese Food Culture, Singapore

Nestled at the basement of Raffles City Shopping Centre, you will find a nice cosy restaurant named Tokyo Sundubu. At Tokyo Sundubu, it serves a hearty, collagen-rich Korean Tofu Stew. It aims to incorporate this dish into the Japanese food culture through enhancing the flavours of the soups and ingredients while maintaining its authentic taste.

I ordered myself a Chicken Vegetable Sundubu which comes with a bowl of steamed rice, seasoned vegetables, and chicken. The stew includes tofu, egg, spring onions, Asari Clam, shrimps and deep-fried tofu. Priced at only $16, it is definitely value for money. This set can be eaten in two meals or two persons. What I love about this stew is the warm and comfort feeling whilst eating. The stew gently warmed my stomach and the spicy did not hurt my stomach too. The silken tofu cubes were beautifully cut and they complements with the stew excellently. Each mouthful of the stew was a delight. I could not stop savouring the stew and yearned for more. How to enjoy:
  • Use spoon to mix entire bowl of Sundubu well while it is sizzling hot. Semi-raw egg and silky tofu blended together with soup gives superb flavour.
  • After finishing half the rpice, add Namuru (bean sprouts) and preferred amount of Gochujang sauce over remaining rice. Pour Sundubu over them, mix well and indulge.

Yeah, I am crazy about steamed rice. I've learnt to appreciate rice because of its sweetness and chewy texture. As you chew the steamed rice slowly, you can taste the sweetness in the delicious grain. A prefect steamed write rice will be sweet and chewy, not soggy. (Food rating: 5/5)

So, what is Sundubu?
Sundubu is a type of Korean stew featuring tofu cooked with a variety of ingredients such as vegetables, meat and seafood. The dish gained popularity after a restaurant specialising in Sundubu opened in Los Angeles by a korean immigrant. Its success led to more Sundubu specialty restaurants opening in cities like New York.

I will be back!
