[Updated] 阿財虱目魚肚 - Cheap eats for supper, Taipei

Located five minutes away from Ximen Station is a popular joint amongst the locals in Taipei. Opens at 10pm, the restaurant - 阿財虱目魚肚 closes at 5am every day. It is a great place for supper and you will not miss the bright blue signage at the storefront.

Placed on top of the steamy pearly-white rice was glossy braised pork belly (魯肉飯), cut into small thin strips. These jelly-like fats melted the moment they were put in the mouth. The sweet chewy rice was so delicious that it could even be eaten on its own. Aside to the delectable rice, I was disappointed with the braised pork belly, which seriously lacked the aroma. On the overall, the braised pork belly, which was the highlighted, tasted below ordinary. (Food rating: 2.5/5)

Fried Milk Fish (煎魚肚) was a simple fried fish, drizzled with lime. With the lime zest, I loved the crispy texture. (Food rating: 4/5)

Braised Pork Intestines (魯小腸) are not the usual intestines from Kway Chap. The intestines were lightly braised and topped with ginger strips.  Though the intestines may look dry, the juices exploded in your mouth when chewed. I prefer the Kway Chap's intestines to these Taiwanese Braised intestines. (Food rating: 3/5)

Onion Omelette (蔥蛋) was one of the more delicious dishes I had at the restaurant. Fried till golden brown, the omelette with spring onions remained moist inside. (Food rating: 3.5/5)

The Braised Pork Belly rice (悾肉飯) was a simple bowl of chewy pearly-white rice served with a huge piece of pork belly. The rice was beautiful, where it tasted superbly delicious. However,  the braised pork belly was a little bland and lacked aroma. If you are looking for quantity more than quality, the braised pork belly rice, priced at TWD40, will be your preferred choice. Served in a sizzling hot pan, the Squid Rings (三杯花枝) stir-fried with beansprouts and green vegetables were marvelous. The squid rings was soft and crispy. A piece of crispy squid rings with crunchy bean sprouts were a great combination. (Food rating: 4/5)

Marinated lamb slices stir-fried with green leafy kang kong (炒羊肉) left a nice impression on me. The meat was juicy and tender and the vegetables were green and crunchy. The marinade was slightly salty but eating with white rice would balance out. (Food rating: 3.5/5)

Beef cubes with Garlic (牛小排) was one of highlights at 阿財虱目魚肚. The beef cubes were succulent and easy to bite. (Food rating: 4/5)

Stir-fried with minced garlic, the green vegetables was freshly prepared. (Food rating: 2.5/5)
