Opened since 1875, Old Shanghai Restaurant offers authentic Shanghainese food to locals and tourists alike. The restaurant has not moved since it was founded. For those who yearn to try Shanghai's local dishes, this is the place to go.
Cucumber in Sauce of Shanghai Style [风味酱黄瓜], RMB22
Start your meal with the refreshing Shanghainese appetiser - cucumber in sauce in Shanghai style. The cucumber cubes were very refreshing, cool and crunchy. The sauce, however, was heavy in taste, honeyed and vinegary. Eating on its own could be too much. Suggest eating it with a bowl of steamed white rice as the rice will neutralise the heavy taste. (Food rating: 2.5/5)
Delicious Dried Wheat-gluten [四喜烤夫], RMB20
A simple, yet saccharine appetiser, the wheat gluten offers diners a local dish prepared in Shanghai style. The wheat gluten had a nice texture and had a nice aroma. The peanuts were crunchy and had a rich fragrance. An appetiser to start an ambrosial Shanghainese cuisine. (Food rating: 3.5/5)
The smoked duck drizzled with brown sauce was tender but yet sugary. Each piece of duck meat was cooked perfectly, retaining its moisture. The dish is best eaten with steamed white rice to balance out the sweetness. (Food rating: 3/5)
Spare ribs cut into strips, deep fried, and then sprinkled with salt and spices. The spare ribs were succulent even though they were deep fried. When eaten with the salt and spices, the sweetness exploded into the mouth. However, too much of them made me a little queasy. (Food rating: 3/5)
