More local delights from Qiji, Singapore

Similar to the typical Fast Food concept, Qiji offers a variety of Singaporean food that whets your appetite.



Tauhu Goreng is a dish of fried beancurd popular in both Singapore and Malaysia. This dish was made from deep-fried beancurd till golden brown, cucumber strips, bean sprouts and topped with spicy gravy. The gravy was prepared with shallots, garlic, chilli peppers, shrimp paste, soy sauce and tamarind juice. The beancurd were very freshly prepared. With the thick gravy, the entire beancurd experience was delightful. (Food rating: 3.5/5)



Laksa, a Peranakan cuisine popular in both Singapore and Malaysia, is one of my favourites. You can have a scrumptious meal at SGD4.80. Though I avoid eating foods with coconut milk, I always cannot resist having a bowl of Laksa from Qiji. The gravy was thick with bountiful fragrance that I could not stop eating until there was not a single drop of gravy left in the bowl. I believe that you will also like it. Do try the Laksa at Qiji. Unlike the deep-fried spring rolls in the United States, the popiah (薄餅) or Spring Roll was freshly prepared. This type of spring roll was typically popular in Singapore, Malaysia, Thailand and even Taiwan. The popiah skin was a thin piece of crepe which was freshly prepared. Popiah was usually eaten with sweet sauce, topped with braised shredded turnip, shredded hard boiled egg, lettuce, garlic, chilli, chopped peanuts, fried shallots, and bean sprouts. What I love about the popiah from Qiji was the popiah skin. The way the skin was prepared was slightly different from the normal skins. It was a little chewy and will not become soggy after some time. (Food rating: 4/5)
