Huangmenjimifan (吉香斋黄焖鸡米饭), Shanghai, China (Food rating: 4/5)

One of the key highlights while touring in Shanghai was the Stewed Chicken (焖鸡) cafe - 吉香斋黄焖鸡米饭. My friend and I wanted to dine at the cafe, located just behind the famous Nanjing East Pedestrian Road belt, a couple of days ago but the place was overcrowded. This time, we managed to find a table easily.

There were three different stewed dishes and we ordered a large Stewed Chicken (焖鸡)and a large Stewed Pork Rib (焖X肉). We requested for medium spicy and the sauce was both fragrant and spicy. Both dishes cooked in claypots were extremely delicious and mouthwatering. I could not stop eating. I picked the food and put them into my mouth as if my hands were mechanical.

The Spicy Chicken Claypot (see photo above) was spicy and a little salty, I am sure, due to the soy sauce. I could taste a tint of sesame fragrance in the sauce. In the stew, there were ginger and red chilli slices that added the spiciness in the dish. Along with the black fungus and chinese coriander, the stew had an addictive taste that you could not stop pouring the sauce onto the steamed rice and eat it together. However, wI need to highlight that it was not the sesame chicken even though similar ingredients were used. The taste was definitely different. The meat was beautifully cut and very tender. As for the pork rib claypot, it was equally good but there was a slight difference. This sauce was sweeter even though similar ingredients such as black fungus were used. Although the meat was tender and the sauce was delicious, I still prefer the stewed chicken to the stewed pork rib. The use of chilli padi was excellent and the spiciness was just nice.
