Food Centre - Prawn noodles + black carrot cake, Singapore (Food rating: 3/5)

Have you been craving for local Singaporean food but not sure what to eat? I am glad when a friend suggested me to Kovan Hougang Market and Food Centre. I have forgotten the wide variety of food that I can choose from without travelling all over the island to get good local food.

For one is the Fried Prawn Noodles (福建面). It is usually remembered as Hokkien Prawn Noodles to many locals and is one of the local delights you must try in Singapore. At Kovan, I could not resist the mouthwatering fragrance and I was lured to the stall. Without much hesitation, I ordered a SGD6 serving of noodles to take away. The wait was a little long but I think it was worth it. The noodles were chewy but the prawn stock was slightly little. Perhaps that the staff were too busy that they forgot about the spicy chilli sauce and lime. I can't say much about this dish as the important condiments were missing. However, the noodles were still enjoyable. (Food rating: 2.5/5)

One of my favourite Singaporean dishes is the Black Carrot Cake. Made from white radish, the white radish was then cooked into a cake, cut into bite sizes before they were fried with preserved white radish and chopped garlic. There are two kinds of fried carrot cakes - white or black. I prefer the black one to the white one. The black carrot cake is sweet and savoury at the same time but the white carrot cake is more savoury.

I was taken by surprise when I tried the black carrot cake. Though the cakes are mildly charred, there was a very nice fragrance and taste. The sweet black sauce and the fried eggs were absolutely delicious. Even when the carrot cake was cold, they tasted delicious as if it was piping hot. I personally feel that that fragrance and taste could not be easily replicated anywhere. The person who cooked this dish was an old hand. (Food rating: 4/5)
