老妈麻辣香锅@New York Food Mall, New York, United States (Food rating: 4/5)

Are you game for spicy food? If you are, why not try the Spicy Hot Pot (麻辣香锅)?

How do we order the food? (1) Inform the staff your selection. There is a wide selection of food items such as golden mushroom, pork, beancurd skin, etc. (2) Inform the staff the level of spiciness - small (小辣), medium (中辣) and big (大辣).

There were three categories of food - (1) Meat at USD8.50/lb, (2) Seafood and (3) Others at USD8.50/lb. Unlike the one we ate at Ri Ri Hong Mala Hot Pot in Singapore, the food was itemised and you just had to pay the items you chose. The difference between the one in Singapore and Lao Ma Mala Hot Pot (老妈麻辣香锅) here was the spiciness. The one in Singapore was extremely spicy at the medium level of spiciness. I had running nose and perspiring while eating the hot pot. However, here, the spiciness was not even that level when I asked for highest level.

We ordered a variety of items: thinly sliced fresh pork, beef slices, fish balls, fish cakes, golden mushrooms, mushrooms, bean curd, soy skin and greens. All these we spent a total of USD23, including four bowls of steamed rice. For this amount of food, the chef packed it into two boxes which we could split into two meals. It would be a good savings if you were on a tight budget. Although the mala hot pot was not as spicy as I wanted it to be, there was a nice fragrance which was palatable. (Food rating: 4/5)
