Waipojia [外婆家] @ 杭州大厦B座8楼, Hangzhou, China

From our last two fantastic dining experience at Waipojia (外婆家), we were back to the restaurant we had for the first time at block B of Hangzhou Tower (杭州大厦). Waipojia is a restaurant chain in China like Singapore's Crystal Jade Group of Restaurants and Imperial Treasure Group of Restaurants.

We ordered a couple of dishes and a bowl of the highly recommended Pian Er Chuan (片儿川). I was not feeling well that day and we decided to go easy with our stomachs.

For two persons, we spent a total of RMB117 (SGD25). At this price, the food quality was excellent and the portions were huge. If it was not because of my poor appetite, I would have finished all the food.

Beef slices with oyster mushroom (牛肉杏鲍菇) (see photo above) was a refreshing cold appetitser. The thin beef slices were flavourful and the marinade was very well mixed. What I liked about it was it was light and yet flavourful. (Food rating: 4/5)

We ordered a hard-boiled egg (温泉). The picture in the menu looked too enticing to refuse. The egg was soft and the yolk was semi-dry. Though it was delicious eating it on its own, we prefer to have some condiments. (Food rating: 3/5)

How about having something different like Vegetarian Roasted Duck (灵隐素烧鵝)? Using multiple layers of soy skin, this dish looked like a crepe. Between every layer, there were strips of carrots. This combo were then drizzled in some braised sauce. This was definitely an interesting dish, but the taste was too strong for me. (Food rating: 3/5)

Grandma's beef cubes (外婆小牛肉) was the most delicious dish I had today. The beef cubes were perfectly glazed with honey or sugar. The beef was tender and perfectly cooked. I could taste a combination of spiciness and sweetness. There were also many garlic chunks in the dish. Garlic is said to have good health benefits and I ate my first big piece of garlic. I usually eat minced garlic but never large chunks like this. To tell you the truth, it was a peculiar experience. I could not describe it in words and it was not a bad experience after all. We also ordered two other dishes which we had previously ordered.

The flat noodles with cold sauce (西子凉粉) was still very refreshing each time we ate it. It was our favourite since we arrived in Hangzhou. The sauce was perfectly mixed and the texture of noodles were fantastic! It was a perfect blend. (Food rating: 4/5)

The Hangzhou style Pian Er Chuan (片儿川) is one of Hangzhou favourite's people. Comprise of preserved vegetables, shredded meat and and sliced bamboo shoots, the noodle dish was cooked in the southern way. It still tasted like the homemade preserved vegetables that my mother cooks, just that noodles was added in the dish. I wonder if I could replicate this dish when I am back home. Note: the portion was huge and it would be best shared with four persons. (Food rating: 4/5)
